Which Blade ?

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Few weeks ago I started an experiment to design a sword by using your help. We proposed a simple poll about the next color for the Draken.  Since it was so successful, I’d like to try it again.

I would like you to choose between two blades: The Diamond v.s. Double Fuller.

Diamond Blade

The diamond has been our regular blade for awhile now.  We call it the diamond simply because of the shape of the tip which looks like a diamond.  You may have noticed most of our sword have this tip.  This blade was specifically designed to be safe and to resit to tuck tip.  The diamond has a classic look and that’s what makes Calimacils swords very unique.

Double Fuller Blade

This is our new blade.  The name came from the shape which is a double fuller.  The idea of the double fuller came from many comments we have about the look of our blade.  I decided to work on a new blade design by adding more of an edge and to narrow the tip which gives it a totally new shape.  The result is a new blade, one that is more sharp but with the same level of security.

I need to know which blade we should use.

Please vote or send comments, I will take action on the result of this poll.

A Calimacil's Wii game ?

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

I recently received this video showing a virtual sword fight that can be played on the Wii.  This video has made me realize just how incredible the Wii is.  Since viewing that video I have begun to dream about a Calimacil video game for the Wii.

Imagine being able to practice your sword fighting movement, testing your performance and skills and being able to fight with a virtual opponent all by using a real Calimacil sword integrated with the Wii!

Well, for sure that will never be as great as a real sword fight but atleast that gives you idea on how to spend the winter time waiting for the next LARP.

So, what do you think of a Calimacil video game, should we do it ?

Creation of a new martial arts sword

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Few months ago we have started to look into developing a new type of weapon for Taiji Chuan. I am pleased to tell you we are progressing in that project by working with Vincent Girard from Art du Tao.

Vincent started practicing martial arts at the age of 6 years. From Judo to Kung fu and Taiji Chuan, Vincent has become  a real martial art master over the years.

Vincent suggested a new type of weapon to be used to practice martial arts. Traditionally students would  use a metal or a wood sword, which in some cases could be very dangerous.  Vincent suggested the idea of creating a sword using Calimacil technology.

Outside of being a martial art master and a teacher, Vincent is also a sculptor and an artist. With those skills, he recently started to create the matrix of what we hope will become the dream sword to practice martial arts.

The design process of the sword

At first Vincent sketched the design of the hilt. He took his inspiration from history and the movies. The main design is to use a bat which symbolizes luck within asian culture. You can see the draft he made by hand.

After that he created a wood model which we will use as a base for the molding process.

From that we will design a blade and will manage to use the right amount of Calimacil polyurethane to mold the final sword.

Hopefully we will have it ready for you shortly.

The Draken will be green!

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Following the survey (including French) you indicated to us that the Draken sword must be green! So be it, I will ask my team to make the change and the Draken will now be green.

This survey was a first test for me in order to know your tastes. We choose something easy to play with: the color, but I want to do more. My goal is to create weapons with you. You can change things by sending us your requests, ideas and suggestions. I do not know if we will be able to do everything and nor how, but I want to find a way of working with you.
