Valentines Day and Toy Fair 2010
So today’s a big day… it’s Valentines Day, sure, but it’s also the first day of Toy Fair 2010 at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York City.
This is the 107th year for the venerable show, which boasts “over 20,000 attendees, 350,000 square feet of exhibit space, 100,000 products with over 7,000 never before seen in the world, 1200+ exhibitors, [and] 1000 global media representatives.” It’s hosted by Toy Industry Association, Inc, the “not-for-profit trade association for producers and importers of toys and youth entertainment products sold in North America”, and runs from February 14-17th, ending just in time for Dreamation (you haven’t forgotten that starts Thursday, have you?)
Like any other trade show, TF2010 is the event where industry people can come together to unveil new products, swap war stories, network with new and old faces, and generally indulge in a week-long bender (wait, maybe that last part is just the Game Developers Conference…). Of course, TF2010 has something the other shows don’t (except for GDC): TOYS! And the attendees get to play with ‘em! And by attendees, I mean attendEE, and by attendee, I mean me.
No, Calimacil won’t have a booth set up (that’d be a bit out of place, don’t you think?), but yours truly has in fact scored a pass to this prestigious trade show. One of the perks of being involved in the game industry I suppose… and um, having a friend who actually makes toys for a living and is willing to farm out one of their company passes
.
So yes, I will be undertaking serious research in competitors… and new developments in the field… and um, maybe, you know, play with a… toy or two….
Ah who am I kidding?
TOYS!
